Trip Itinerary

Day: 01 Kathmandu to Kyirong (2,800 m)

Your journey begins with an early pickup from your hotel in Kathmandu to ensure you reach the Rasuwagadhi Border before it closes in the afternoon. The drive takes you out of the valley through Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, descending toward Trishuli Bazaar along the scenic Trishuli River, where a short breakfast stop is common. From there, the road climbs steeply to Dhunche, offering views of Ganesh Himal and Langtang Lirung, with a mandatory permit check at the entrance to Langtang National Park. The route then descends to Syabrubesi and continues along the rugged road beside the Bhote Koshi River toward Timure, the last Nepali village before the border. Immigration procedures at both Nepalese and Tibetan checkpoints typically take about an hour. After crossing into Tibet via the border bridge, you continue toward Kyirong, obtaining the necessary PSP permit along the way, and stop around midday for lunch after traveling approximately 40 kilometers from the border. Along the journey, you will enjoy breathtaking views of waterfalls, rivers, gorges, and lush forests, making the drive as memorable as the destinations themselves. The day concludes with accommodation arranged at a guesthouse on the Nepal side before continuing your journey into Tibet the following day.

Day: 02 Kyirong to Old Tingri (4,350m)

The journey from Kyirong Valley begins with a steady, winding climb as rhododendron and pine forests give way to alpine shrubs and rocky plateau terrain. You will cross Kong Tang Lamu Pass (5,236 m), where prayer flags flutter and panoramic views open back into the green Kyirong gorge and forward across Tibet’s vast plains. Along the way, you can visit the captivating Mila Repa Cave and its waterfall, a 30–40-minute hike from the main road. The route continues past the Kyirong Pass at over 4,900 m, then travels alongside the serene Peiku Tso Lake (4,590 m) on the left and the majestic Shishapangma Snow Mountain on the right, with Tibetan wild asses, black-necked cranes, and nomadic herds adding life to the landscape. Crossing the high Lalung La and Thong La passes, you are rewarded with breathtaking Himalayan panoramas, including Shishapangma, Cho Oyu, and distant Everest. Descending onto the Friendship Highway (G318), the journey concludes in Old Tingri (4,300 m), a rustic town with wide dirt streets, local shops, and famous "backyard" views of Everest and Cho Oyu, stunning scenery, and natural grandeur along the way.

Day: 03 Old Tingri to Shigatse (3,840 m)

The drive from Old Tingri to Shigatse is a spectacular journey through the heart of the Tibetan Plateau, covering approximately 240 km (150 miles) along the legendary G318 Friendship Highway in 5–7 hours. Departing Old Tingri at 4,300 m, you traverse the Tingri Plain with its herds of yaks and occasional Tibetan gazelles before beginning a long ascent to the Gyatso La Pass (5,248 m), the highest point of the highway, where colorful prayer flags flutter against sweeping Himalayan panoramas. After descending to the historic trading town of Lhatse (4,050 m) for a lunch break and leg stretch, the route crosses the rugged Tsuo La Pass (4,500 m) and enters the fertile Shigatse Valley. Along the way, the landscape transforms from rocky highlands to expansive barley and mustard fields dotted with traditional Tibetan farmhouses. Upon arrival in Shigatse (3,840 m), Tibet’s second-largest city and seat of the Panchen Lama, the skyline is dominated by the golden roofs of Tashilhunpo Monastery and the rebuilt Shigatse Dzong. In the evening, travelers can join pilgrims for a kora around the monastery, explore the Shigatse Walking Street for Tibetan and Sichuanese cuisine, and enjoy improved sleep at this lower altitude after several days at high elevations.

Day: 04 Shigatse to Gyantse (4,020m)

The day begins in Shigatse with a morning visit to the historic Tashilhunpo Monastery, founded in 1447 as the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama. Highlights include the gilded 26-meter Future Buddha Statue (Jampa Chenmo) and the massive thangka wall, while a kora around the monastery offers panoramic views of the Shigatse Dzong before departure. The road then climbs steeply to Karo La Pass (5,036 m), where the massive Mt. Noijin Kangsang glacier can be viewed directly from the roadside. Descending from the pass, you enter the expansive basin of Yamdrok Lake (4,441 m), one of Tibet’s three sacred lakes, famous for its shifting shades of blue and winding shoreline, dotted with yaks, decorated Tibetan Mastiffs, and opportunities to observe local life. The journey continues with the ascent to Kamba La Pass (4,794 m), offering the definitive "postcard" view of Yamdrok Lake below, framed by colorful prayer flags and snow-capped peaks. From there, the road descends through switchbacks into the fertile Yarlung Tsangpo River valley, crossing the Chushul Bridge, where the Brahmaputra meets the Lhasa River.   • Potala Palace: Start with the iconic Potala Palace, a UNESCO World Heritage site and a symbol of Tibetan Buddhism. Perched on a solitary hill, this majestic palace was originally built by Tibet’s first ruler, Songtsen Gampo, and later expanded into the grand structure seen today. Day: 07 Lhasa City Tour

Today’s itinerary introduces you to three of its most iconic landmarks, offering a deep insight into Tibetan Buddhism and local life.

  • Sera Monastery: Located approximately 5 kilometers north of Lhasa, Sera Monastery is one of the great monastic universities of Tibet. Renowned for its serene surroundings and architectural beauty, the monastery once housed over 5,000 monks at its peak. Today, it remains a vibrant center of learning, where you can witness the famous monk debates held in the courtyard—an engaging and unique aspect of Tibetan Buddhist practice. Despite historical challenges, Sera continues to preserve its religious traditions and scholarly heritage.
  • Jokhang Monastery: Proceed to the spiritual heart of Tibet, the revered Jokhang Monastery, located in the bustling old quarter of Lhasa. This sacred temple is the most important pilgrimage site for Tibetan Buddhists. Inside, you’ll find the highly venerated statue of Shakyamuni Buddha, believed to have been brought to Tibet by Princess Wencheng upon her marriage to King Songtsen Gampo. You are expected to arrive in Kathmandu around midday, where a dedicated transfer will be waiting to escort you to your hotel.
